The gorilla trekking sectors in Bwindi impenetrable National Park

The Bwindi Impenetrable National Park offers four distinct regions for gorilla trekking: Situated on the brink of a rift valley in the Kanungu area of southwest Uganda sits the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The Democratic Republic of the Congo borders it on the west, and the closest major town to the park is Kabale Town, which lies to the southeast. The area of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is 331 square kilometers. It takes about seven or eight hours to get to the park.

The inaccessible Bwindi National Park is well-known for its gorilla trekking. The forest is home to approximately 300 mountain gorillas, over 200 species of butterflies, and roughly 324 species of birds. It serves as a habitat for the gorillas. More than 120 creatures, including antelopes and elephants, find refuge in this biologically rich area.

Sectors for Gorilla Trekking

One of the most well-liked and daring activities that draws lots of tourists to Uganda is gorilla trekking. Sector Nkuringo

The southernmost region of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is home to the Nkuringo Sector. Three habituated gorilla families—the Nkuringo, Christmas, and Bushaho families—live in the Nkuringo sector and are accessible for daily trekking. The dominant adult male known as the silverback, who is typically the largest and strongest gorilla, is in charge of the close-knit Nkuringo gorilla family. They are renowned for their gorgeous setting and mind-blowing views, which make the hike to see them much more pleasurable.

Road transportation is available to reach the Nkuringo sector. Driving from Kampala to the park will take you through Masaka, Mbarara, and Kabale and should take about seven hours. It is also reachable by air; to get there, reserve flights from Entebbe International Airport to Kisoro Airstrip. From there, take a 2-hour road ride to Kuringo.

Sector Ruhija

One of the four gorilla trekking sectors in the eastern portion of the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is the Ruhija sector. Three habituated gorilla families—the Bitukura, Oruzogo, and Kyaguliro families—live in the Ruhija region. The Oruzogo family is well-known for its lively and playful members; you can expect to see a lot of playful activities and interactions within this group. The Kyaguliro family is a relatively new habituated group, and studying their behavior offers important insights into gorilla social dynamics. The Bitukura family is renowned for its size, with several silverbacks and playful young gorillas.

By road, you may get to the Ruhija Sector in the Kabale district by traveling from Kampala through Masaka, Mbarara, and Kabale before arriving to the park. It is also reachable by air; to get there, reserve a scheduled aircraft from Entebbe airport to Kihihi airstrip, from which you can connect by road to the Ruhija sector.

Sector Rushaga

In the southern region of the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, there is another gorilla trekking area called Rushaga Sector. Eight habituated gorilla families, including the Nshongi, Mishaya, Bweza, Busingye, Bikingi, Kahungye, Rwigi, and Mucunguzi groups, reside in the Rushaga region. With several silverbacks, the Nshongi gorilla family is one of the biggest in Bwindi, whereas the Bweza gorilla family is a smaller group that allows for closer encounters with the gorillas.

The Rushaga sector is accessible by road from Kampala, passing through Masaka, Mbarara, and Kabale before arriving at the park. Rushaga sector is situated in the southern portion of Bwindi. It is also reachable by air; to get there, reserve a scheduled aircraft from Entebbe airport to Kisoro airstrip, and then take the route to Rushaga.

Sector of Buhoma

One of the four sectors in the northern region of Bwindi National Park is the Buhoma sector. The Mubare, Habinyaja, Rushegura, Binyindo, and Katwe gorilla groups are among the five habituated gorilla families that call Buhoma Sector home. Rushegura Gorilla Family is a peaceful and tranquil group, making them a favorite and serene group. Habinyaja Gorilla Family is noted for its huge size and fun demeanor. Mubare Gorilla Family is the oldest, was the first to become habituated, and has undergone some changes in leadership.

By road, you can reach the Buhoma sector in the northern region of Bwindi by traveling from Kampala through Masaka, Mbarara, Ntugamo, and Rukungiri before arriving at the park. It can also be reached by air; to do this, arrange a flight from Entebbe airport to Kihihi airstrip, from where you can arrange a driving trip to Buhoma.
