2 Days Dian Fossey Hiking Tour

Overview

This 2 days tour is a short adventure that takes you to Volcanoes national park in Rwanda to visit Dian Fossey’s graveyard. Dian Fossey was a prominent primatologist who channeled much of her time on research and conservation of the endangered mountain gorillas. The safari will take you for a hike to Karisoke research center between Mt. Karisimbi and Bisoke to sight Dian Fossey’s tomb near the gorilla cemetery with fascinating views of animals, primates, and different bird species among others.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and transfer from Kigali to the Volcanoes National Park.

Our driver guide from Chosen Expeditions and Tours will come to pick you from either the airport or your hotel in Kigali and give you a precise briefing about the tour and expectations. After the briefing, the driver will take you for a Kigali city tour to visit the genocide memorial site, the former presidential palace, crafts centers among others and later have lunch. Embark on a 2-3 hours journey to Volcanoes national park in Musanze with scenic views of the rolling hills and farmlands. Check in at the reserved lodge and drive to Twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo if time allows.  Dinner and overnight at the lodge after the twin lakes tour.

Meal plan: Full board.

Day 2: Dian Fossey Hike and departure.

Begin this amazing day with breakfast and transfer to the headquarters for a simple briefing with packed lunch from the lodge. Drive to the starting point and embark on a hike to Dian Fossey. The hike will first take you to Karisoke Research Center between Karisimbi and Bisoke through different vegetation zones to sight different flora and fauna. On arrival at Karisoke, you will be able to see Dian Fossey’s graveyard next to her favorite gorilla called Digit near the gorilla cemetery.

Have picnic lunch and descend back to the starting point to meet the driver guide for a transfer back to the lodge to relax. In the evening, check out of the lodge and set off back to a hotel in Kigali or airport for a departure flight back home. End of the safari.
