River Kagera’s amusements.

The Kagera River forms a border between Tanzania and Rwanda. It flows between these two countries for around 100 kilometers, crossing several lakes and wetlands along the way. Additionally, these are bordered by a number of gently sloping hills that are farmed in Tanzania, while they can also be found in Rwanda near Akagera National Park.

There is a lot of papyrus (Cyperus papyrus) in the lakes and wetlands. The 20000-hectare Ibanda Arena Game Reserve in Tanzania’s extreme northwest has a provisionally delineated Important Bird Area, the boundaries of which are unknown despite the absence of any information regarding the area’s bird species.

Papyrus wetlands of the River Ruvubu, which empties into the Kagera River to the north, are home to Chloropeta gracilirostris. Only one Balaeniceps rex has been found in the Tanzanian area of the marshes, when over fifty were common in the area in the 1990s.

The flooded grassland on the northwest coast of Lake Rushwa has also been observed to be home to gallinago, and it is possible that migratory species use the same habitats in the Important Bird Areas on a seasonal basis. The Kagera River and the Ruvubu River to the south are home to the Laniarius mufumbiri.

The greatest tributary of Lake Victoria and the most remote headstream of the River Nile, the Kagera River (sometimes called Akagera) starts in Burundi near the northern edge of Lake Tanganyika. It is formed at the meeting point of its two headstreams, Nyawarongo and Ruvubu, which are supplied by streams that emerge in the highlands between Congo and Rwanda to the east of Lake Kivu and Lake Tanganyika.

This river flows more than 400 kilometers north and east. Its middle course forms a border between Rwanda and Tanzania, and it also forms a border between Uganda and Tanzania for a short distance to the east. After passing through Tanzania, the river enters Lake Victoria, which is located 25 miles north of Bukoba.

The Akagera River basin, which includes Akagera National Park, is rugged and dotted with lakes and swamps. It is mostly located inside the Land of a Thousand Hills. The southernmost tributary of Ruvironza, the Lukarara, is its longest. The Kagera River is quite difficult to cruise through for the most part, and Kyaka is the only port. Mostly shallow-draft cargo steamers service Tanzania.
