Wildlife Reserve in Bokora

The steep Elgon region’s Bokora Wildlife Reserve serves as a wildlife corridor that links Matheniko Wildlife Reserve, which is located southeast of Kidepo Valley, and Pian-Upe Wildlife Reserve, which is located farther southeast of Kidepo but considerably closer to Mt. Elgon National Park. Numerous wildlife species alternate between these networks of protected areas on a regular basis in accordance with the weather patterns.

The Bokora Wildlife Reserve, spanning 2,056 km2, is Uganda’s second-largest wildlife geographic surface area. Its biological significance was acknowledged during colonial times and it was gazetted as a wildlife protection area in 1964. The Bokora Wildlife Reserve is mostly a flat plain with a predominance of stunted trees, bushes, and brush, as well as the semi-arid plant cover typical of the Karamoja region.

Some areas of the terrain are bare in the dry season, which runs from June to September and December to February. Two recognizable, striking natural features that penetrate the clear skies in the northern region of Bokora Wildlife Reserve are the Mountains Kadam and Napak.
