UWA permits

Planning a gorilla trekking adventure in Uganda is an exhilarating prospect. The thought of standing face-to-face with a mountain gorilla in the misty forests of Bwindi or Mgahinga is enough to stir the soul. But before you can embark on this once-in-a-lifetime journey, there is one essential item you must secure: UWA permits. The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) is the government body responsible for managing Uganda’s national parks and issuing permits for gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking, and other wildlife activities. At Chosen Expeditions, we understand that navigating the permit system can be daunting, especially given the high demand and limited availability. Here is your complete guide to understanding, booking, and securing UWA permits for your Ugandan adventure.

What Are UWA Permits?

UWA permits are official authorizations issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority that grant holders the right to participate in specific wildlife activities within Uganda’s national parks. The most sought-after permits are for gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. These permits are limited in number each day to ensure the protection of the gorillas and the quality of the visitor experience.

Types of UWA Permits:

  • Gorilla Trekking Permits: Allow one hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family

  • Gorilla Habituation Permits: Allow four hours with a gorilla family undergoing habituation (available only in Bwindi’s Rushaga sector)

  • Chimpanzee Trekking Permits: Allow one hour with habituated chimpanzee communities in Kibale, Budongo, and Kyambura

  • Chimpanzee Habituation Permits: Allow a full day with chimpanzees undergoing habituation (Kibale Forest)

  • Golden Monkey Trekking Permits: Allow one hour with golden monkeys in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Why Are UWA Permits Limited?

The limited number of UWA permits is a deliberate conservation strategy. Each habituated gorilla family can only be visited by a maximum of eight visitors per day. This restriction minimizes stress on the gorillas, reduces the risk of disease transmission, and ensures an intimate, high-quality experience for visitors. With only a few hundred permits available daily across all gorilla families, demand consistently exceeds supply—especially during peak seasons.

When to Book UWA Permits

The golden rule of securing UWA permits is to book as early as possible. For gorilla trekking permits, we recommend booking at least six months in advance, especially if you are traveling during peak seasons.

Peak Seasons (Book 6-12 Months Ahead):

  • June to September: The long dry season, the most popular time for trekking

  • December to February: The short dry season, also very busy

Shoulder Seasons (Book 3-6 Months Ahead):

  • March and November: Transition months with moderate crowds

Low Seasons (Book 1-3 Months Ahead):

  • April, May, and October: Wet season months with fewer visitors; permits are easier to secure

How to Book UWA Permits

There are two primary ways to secure UWA permits: booking directly through the Uganda Wildlife Authority or booking through a licensed tour operator like Chosen Expeditions.

Booking Through Chosen Expeditions

We strongly recommend booking through a reputable tour operator. Here’s why:

  • Expertise: We know the permit system inside and out and can advise on the best sectors and dates for your needs.

  • Efficiency: We handle all paperwork, payments, and confirmations on your behalf.

  • Availability: Our relationships with UWA allow us to secure permits even during peak seasons.

  • Peace of Mind: We verify permits before you travel, eliminating the risk of arriving without a confirmed booking.

Booking Directly Through UWA

If you choose to book directly, you can contact the Uganda Wildlife Authority headquarters in Kampala or book through their online portal. You will need to provide:

  • Full names as they appear on passports

  • Passport numbers

  • Preferred trekking dates

  • Preferred sector (Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, or Nkuringo for gorillas)

Payment and Confirmation

UWA permits must be paid for in full at the time of booking. Payments are non-refundable, though under certain circumstances, permits may be transferable to another person or date with advance notice.

Payment Methods:

  • Bank transfer to UWA’s designated accounts

  • Credit card at UWA headquarters

  • Through a licensed tour operator who will handle the transaction

What You Receive:

Upon successful payment, UWA issues a permit confirmation. This document contains:

  • Your name and passport details

  • The date of your trek

  • The specific gorilla family or sector assigned

  • A unique permit number

Keep this confirmation safe—you will need to present it at the park headquarters on the day of your trek.

What Happens on the Day of Your Trek

With your UWA permits secured, the day of your trek begins with an early morning arrival at the park headquarters for your designated sector. The process includes:

  1. Registration: Present your permit confirmation and passport for verification.

  2. Briefing: A park ranger provides safety instructions and gorilla etiquette.

  3. Group Assignment: You are assigned to a specific gorilla family based on your fitness level and preferences.

  4. Porter Hire: Porters are available for hire (recommended) to assist with your daypack and provide stability on the trails.

UWA Permits for Other Activities

While gorilla trekking permits are the most famous, UWA permits are also required for other activities:

Chimpanzee Tracking Permits

Kibale Forest is the premier destination for chimpanzee tracking, with permits limited to ensure a quality experience. The habituation experience allows a full day with chimpanzees, offering deeper insights into their behavior.

Golden Monkey Trekking Permits

In Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, permits for golden monkey trekking are limited and should be booked in advance.

Hiking and Mountaineering Permits

For those climbing Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga, or Mount Sabinyo in Mgahinga, specific permits are required.
