Uganda’s Rushegura Gorilla Group in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
The Rushegura gorilla group, one of Uganda’s habituated gorilla groups, is tracked in the Buhoma part of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. One of the bigger gorilla groups with a large number of individuals is the Rushegura or R group.
Rushegura was once a part of the Habinyanja group, but after a fight between the two brothers, Silverback caused the group to split into two, creating the Rushegura group. However, Habinyanja also continued to exist with a small number of members, as some members joined the Rushegura group.
It is very active in the Buhoma area, covering a large area. Sightings of it are usually a bonus and have been known to go as far as Batwa village, the UWA park headquarters, Bwindi Waterfall, and even Buhoma Camp.
Sometimes these make their way into the nearby banana groves. The Rushegura gorilla family currently consists of 19 gorillas. Each gorilla has been given a name to facilitate identification, and the ranger guides in the Bwindi forest are familiar with each member.
In addition to noticing that member T is ill, the rangers can also anticipate where the gorilla group to be tracked will be located. Based on their knowledge and experience gained from knowing where the gorillas spent the previous night, they can make these predictions, which have so far lessened the need for the arduous search for gorillas that was necessary in previous years.
Mwirima passed away, and Kabukojo assumed leadership of the Rushegura gorilla troop, among other members. Kyirinvi, Buzinza, Kibande, Nyamunwa, Karungyi, Kibande second baby, Katabazi, Nyampazi, Kafuruka, Kibande baby, Karungyi baby, Kanywanyi baby, Kyirinvi baby, Buzinza baby, Nyamunwa baby, Kibande second baby, and Karungyi baby are the adult females, adult males, and juveniles.
Since gorillas are known to be living creatures and are therefore predicted to increase in numbers throughout time, we anticipate an increase in the Rushegura family’s number in the near future.
