The Famous Silver Springs Monkeys

Cercopithecus doggetti is the scientific name for silver spring monkeys, who are considered to be the oldest species of monkeys globally. These endangered primate species are primarily found in East Africa, particularly in Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

The silver springs monkeys are mostly dependent on the flora and fruits, but they occasionally consume microscopic insects, especially during times of food scarcity. Because these primate species are frugivores, it is thought that their presence has increased seed dissemination throughout the various forests.

They feature hard areas of exposed skin on their buttocks, bony sear passageways, two large premolars in each half of the jaw, narrow noses and septa, and a close-set pair of nostrils that can point either down or forward. Similar to other forest-dwelling primates, silver monkeys face several threats from various predators, the most common being big snakes, birds of prey, and leopards. And for this reason, it is thought that they positively impact the number of predators.
