THE 2021 KWITA-IZINA
THE 2021 KWITA-IZINA CEREMONY.
In 2005, the first gorilla naming ceremony in Rwanda took place. This was done to draw attention to and include the entire globe in the mountain gorillas’ conservation efforts. And that Rwandan customary practice served as the model for the Kwita-Izina 2021 festival. In particular, the custom is to name baby gorillas in front of friends and family as a way to honor life.
Every year on September 6, Rwanda hosts the well-known “Kwita-Izina” gorilla naming ceremony, which is organized by the RDB. The Kwita-Izina 2021 ceremony was held on September 24 this year. Additionally, it was conducted virtually.
In the national park of volcanoes, over 328 gorillas have been given names since 2005. 24 baby gorillas were given names for the 2021 Kwita-Izina ceremony by important figures who are important to Rwandan tourism.
The activity is conducted at Volcanoes National Park, which is home to the baby gorillas and is the only gorilla destination in Rwanda.
Only twenty-four baby mountain gorillas were named at the 17th Kwita-Izina ceremony.

“Superior herd,” Ingeri
The Isimbi gorilla family of Volcanoes National Park gave birth to the Ingeri baby. On January 3, 2021, Ingeri was born in Africa. Kyalin Mbappe and Neymar, the starting players for Paris Saint-Germain, named him. The Rwandan customs of raising cattle served as an influence for the name “Ingeri.” This was said to emphasize how special and superior mountain gorillas are.
Ingabire
The word “ingabire” means “gift” in Rwandan. The name “ingabire” for this male infant gorilla was chosen to represent the increasing number of mountain gorillas, who are valued as gifts in Rwanda. On January 6, 2021, Ingabire was born to Ejoheza, an Isimbi family member. Gruner, the African Parks Network’s operations manager, gave this young gorilla its name.
Kundumurimo
On January 7, 2021, this male baby gorilla was born into the Muhoza gorilla family to father Inkubito. The term Kundumurimo acknowledges the next generation of Rwandans as the protectors of biodiversity preservation. Clement Uwamahoro, a conservation technology officer at Akagera National Park, gave him his name.
Female mountain gorilla Mubyebyi was born to Kubana, a member of the Kureba family. Her birthday is December 23, 2020. The name Kubana means “mother” in Japanese. In order to appreciate and acknowledge mothers’ efforts in raising their children, Mubyeyi was named. Dr. Senait Fisscha, the Susan Thompson Buffet Foundation’s director of global initiatives, gave her the name.
Rudacogora
Born on July 12, 2021, to Ishema of the Pablo gorilla family, Rudacogora is a male baby gorilla. The English translation of the term Rudacogora is “resilient.” This name was selected to represent the Rwandan people’s tenacity, devotion, and fortitude. NBA deputy commissioner Mark Tatum gave this youngster a gorilla name.
Rinda Born on June 14, 2021, to Munezero, Rinda is a male gorilla belonging to the Agashaya gorilla family. The meaning of his name is to preserve. This unique moniker was selected to inspire important participants in gorilla conservation in Rwanda. Rangers and certain communities that commit their entire lives to the conservation of mountain gorillas are among them. The meaning of the name Rinda is “preserve.”
The honor of naming him belonged to retired National Basketball Association player Luol Deng.
Sangwa
Sangwa is a female born on August 29, 2021, to Nchili of the Kwitonda family. Her name means “welcome.” Oluwatosin Oluwole Ajibade, a well-known Nigerian song composer, performer, and businessman (Mr. Eazi), gave her the name.
Nshunguye
Dr. Deborah Dunha, the head of Gorilla Doctors, chose Nshunguye. On April 18, 2021, a female baby gorilla was born into the Titus family. Nshunguye’s name comes from the fact that her birth was a “rescue” for the family.
On June 27, 2021, Mugwire, a male baby gorilla, was born into the Hirwa gorilla family in Magayene. “Mugwire” is a word that implies replication. This was done to commemorate and demonstrate Rwanda’s increasing mountain gorilla population. Additionally, to encourage the development of a favorable environment for these mountain gorillas to flourish,. Antony Lynam, a delegate from the International Congress on Conservation Biology, gave Mugwire his name.
Iribagiza
Born on June 18, 2021, to Nezerwa of the Amahoro family, Iribagiza is a stunning baby gorilla. This name was chosen to honor the beauty that comes from conservation efforts. The environmentalist and photographer Yann Arthus Bertrand named these gorillas.
On November 13, 2021, Kabeho was born to Nzeli, a member of the Kureba gorilla family. Bruce Medolie, a singer and songwriter from Rwanda, gave him his name. He was given such a moniker in order to grant the mountain gorillas a long and healthy life. This was a wonderful choice to illustrate the importance of every person contributing to the achievement of mountain gorilla conservation. The Rwandan people came up with the name Kabeho, which means “long live.”
Umusingi
The Igisha family welcomed a male mountain gorilla into the world on December 11, 2020. His name means “foundation” in the native vernacular. The name was chosen to highlight the preservation of Rwanda’s mountain gorilla population as a primary driving force behind the country’s tourism sector’s expansion. Masai Ujiri, the Toronto Raptors’ president, chose Umusingi.
Ursobe
Variety abounds in Rwanda, and Urusobe embodies that very quality. Without a doubt, the choice of this name reflects the richness of Rwanda’s biodiversity. David Yarrow, a fine-art photographer, gave this stunning female gorilla her name when she was born on August 4, 2021.
Mpanuro
This female gorilla was born on February 6, 2021, into the Musilikale family under Ikaze. According to the English translation from Kinyarwanda, mpanuro signifies guidance. She received recognition for her contributions to the fight against the Corona virus as a young volunteer from Rwanda and a health worker. Ms. Jeanne d’Arc Wamahoro, a young volunteer, and Ms. Alphosine Niwamugeni, a community health worker, are named Mpanuro.
Byiruka Byiruka’s father, Impano, gave birth to him on January 8, 2021. He is a member of the park’s Igisha gorilla family. Carina Bauer, CEO of IMEX, a global exhibition for incentive travel, gave him this unusual title. The reason behind this name was to wish the baby, as well as every member of his family, health and progress. The meaning of the name Byiruka is “to flourish.”
Igicumbi
A female gorilla named Igicumbi was born to Okapi and the Kwitonda family. She was born at Volcanoes National Park on January 1, 2021. Dr. Max Graham, the CEO and founder of Gaints, gave Igicumbi her name. The Virunga massif’s distinctiveness and beauty are showcased by the moniker “Igicumbi,” which means habitat.
Twirinde
Tegereza is home to the Ntambara gorilla family, which gave birth to this kid. His name was given to him by Professor Beth Kaplin, the director of the University of Rwanda’s Center of Excellence in Biodiversity and Natural Resource Management. He was born on December 24th, 2021. The meaning of the name Twirinde is “protection.” It represents the dedication of the employees of Volcanoes Park to the safety, well-being, and preservation of the park’s mountain gorillas.
Nshongore
Turiho is the father of Nshongore, a male baby gorilla born into the Muhoza gorilla family. His birthday is February 26, 2021. Famous football players for Paris Saint-Germain, Marquinhos and Angel di Maria, gave him his name. The meaning of the name Nshongore is “elegant.” It was used in order to emphasize how beautiful Rwanda’s mountain gorillas are.
In the Volcanoes National Park, there is a female gorilla named Iratuje. She was born into the Hirwa gorilla family. She was born on December 18, 2020, and was the daughter of Umoja. H.E. Nicola Bellomo, an ambassador for the European Union, gave her the name. The meaning of the name Iratuje is “peaceful.” The mother of Iratuje, Umoja, is best described by this moniker. She migrated from the Kwitonda family to the Hirwa gorilla family, where she was able to settle in amicably.
Mudasumbwa
Rugira was Mudasumbwa’s father, and he was born into the Musilikale gorilla family. His birthday is July 30, 2020. Saint Germany squad member Sergio Ramos is named Mudasumbwa. The term Mudasumbwa, which means “outstanding,” was chosen to symbolize the respect and dominance that the mountain gorilla species enjoys in the wild.
Kura
Born in Umujyanama, this female gorilla is a member of the Pablo gorilla family. She is the first child born to mother Umujyanama, having been born on February 9, 2021. The name Kura, which means “to rise,” was selected to give the newborn infant best wishes for health and vigor.
Born into the Igisha gorilla family, Inkomezi is a male gorilla. His name, which means inner strength, was given to him at birth on July 6, 2021. Mugabe Aristide, the Patriots Basket Ball Club team captain, came up with this moniker.
Zigama
The Sabyinyo gorilla family is the parent of this male gorilla. He was born on January 25, 2021, to Karema, his father. The name of this gorilla comes from Reeta Roy, the head of the Mastercard Foundation, and the name means “saving” when translated.
Injishi is a male baby gorilla that was born into the Kuryama family. His birthday is July 30, 2021. This gorilla’s name was given by Carlos Manuel Rodriguez, the CEO and chairperson of the Global Environment Facility. The name alludes to the mountain gorillas that inhabit Rwanda and their immense significance.
The aforementioned infant gorillas have been named after many notable figures. The preservation of mountain gorillas in the national park of volcanoes was the main emphasis of the 2021 kwita-Izina ceremony.
