Tanzania is planning to lower the number of cars entering Ngorongoro Conservation Area

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority is considering ways to restrict the number of vehicles entering the crater in response to complaints from several tourists about the number of vehicles entering the crater. The reason for this is that vehicles appear to be a distraction for those taking in the crater’s scenery and wildlife. Even if it is a distraction, the increasing number of cars indicates how well-liked the location is among travelers on Tanzanian safaris. Over 500,000 people visit the Ngorongoro crater each year, generating over 55 billion dollars.

The chief conservator, Dr. Manongi, stated that the goal for tourism revenue in 2014 is $60 billion. He went on to say that the fact that game viewing is currently limited to automobiles is the reason managing vehicle traffic in the caldera is challenging. It is almost time for the peak season to begin, when many people typically visit the Ngorongoro Crater. There will inevitably be more cars on the road; in a given day, the count may easily top 400.

There are already certain restrictions in place at the NCAA; cars without four-wheel drive are not permitted to drive into the crater. Climbing the crater walls is difficult due to their steepness.

After receiving a proposal from a few companies, the NCAA is presently working on implementing the idea of hot air balloons as a means of minimizing the number of automobiles in the crater. One national park that already has hot air balloons is the Serengeti National Park, which is close to Ngorongoro.

A plan to allow horseback riding was also put out, but the crater is home to several carnivores, including cheetahs, lions, hyenas, and leopards, as well as horned herbivores like buffaloes and rhinos, as well as enormous snakes, which make the surroundings extremely hostile to horses.
