Uganda is often called the Pearl of Africa, and for primate enthusiasts, it truly lives up to that name. With over 20 primate species calling this lush country home, Uganda offers some of the most extraordinary primate encounters on Earth. From the majestic mountain gorillas of Bwindi to the playful chimpanzees of Kibale, the primates in Uganda represent an unparalleled diversity that draws travelers from every corner of the globe. At Chosen Expeditions, we have spent decades guiding visitors to encounter these remarkable creatures, and we understand what makes Uganda the ultimate primate destination. Here is your complete guide to the primates in Uganda.
Why Uganda Is a Primate Paradise
Uganda sits at the intersection of East and Central Africa, a position that blesses it with extraordinary biodiversity. The country’s varied habitats—from montane forests to lowland jungles, savannah woodlands to swampy wetlands—create ideal conditions for an astonishing array of primate species. Among the primates in Uganda, you will find:
-
Mountain Gorillas: Over half of the world’s remaining population
-
Chimpanzees: The largest population in East Africa
-
Golden Monkeys: Found only in the Virunga Massif
-
L’Hoest’s Monkeys: An Albertine Rift endemic
-
Black-and-White Colobus: Widespread and easily observed
-
Red-Tailed Monkeys: Common in forested areas
-
Blue Monkeys: Found in montane forests
-
Olive Baboons: Common in savannah parks
-
Vervet Monkeys: Widespread across the country
1. Mountain Gorillas: Uganda’s Crown Jewel
The most famous of all primates in Uganda is undoubtedly the mountain gorilla. Uganda is home to approximately half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas—over 460 individuals—making it the best place on Earth to see these magnificent creatures.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the primary destination for gorilla trekking in Uganda. The park’s name comes from the dense vegetation that creates a dramatic setting for one of the most profound wildlife encounters on Earth. Bwindi is home to over 20 habituated gorilla families spread across four trekking sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo.
The Experience: Gorilla trekking in Bwindi begins with an early morning briefing at your sector’s park headquarters. You are assigned to a gorilla family based on your fitness level and preferences. The trek can last from 30 minutes to five hours or more, depending on where the gorillas nested. When you find them, you have one magical hour in their presence.
Gorilla Habituation Experience: For those seeking a deeper immersion, Bwindi’s Rushaga sector offers the Gorilla Habituation Experience. This $1,500 permit allows four hours with a gorilla family undergoing habituation, accompanied by researchers and trackers.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is Uganda’s second gorilla trekking destination. Located in the Virunga Massif, Mgahinga is home to one habituated gorilla family—the Nyakagezi Group. The park’s smaller size and stunning volcanic backdrop make it a peaceful alternative to Bwindi.
2. Chimpanzees: Our Closest Relatives
Chimpanzees share approximately 98% of their DNA with humans, making them our closest living relatives. Among the primates in Uganda, chimpanzees are the most widespread, with an estimated 5,000 individuals living in the country.
Kibale Forest National Park
Known as the “Primate Capital of the World,” Kibale Forest is the premier destination for chimpanzee tracking in Uganda. The park is home to over 1,500 chimpanzees, with several habituated groups available for trekking. Kibale offers two experiences:
-
Chimpanzee Tracking: A one-hour encounter with a habituated chimpanzee community. Trekking success rates are over 90%.
-
Chimpanzee Habituation Experience: A full day spent with a chimpanzee community undergoing habituation, offering an immersive understanding of chimp behavior.
Budongo Forest
Located within Murchison Falls National Park, Budongo Forest is home to approximately 800 chimpanzees. The forest’s Kaniyo Pabidi sector offers chimpanzee tracking with the added benefit of being close to the wildlife of Murchison Falls.
Kyambura Gorge
In Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kyambura Gorge offers a unique chimpanzee tracking experience in an underground forest. The gorge’s steep walls create a microclimate that supports a small chimpanzee community.
3. Golden Monkeys: The Virunga Specialists
Golden monkeys are among the rarest and most beautiful primates in Uganda. Found only in the Virunga Massif, these vibrant primates with their striking orange-gold fur are a joy to observe. In Uganda, golden monkey trekking takes place in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
The Experience: Golden monkey tracking is generally less strenuous than gorilla trekking. The monkeys inhabit bamboo forests on the lower slopes of the volcanoes, and treks typically last one to three hours. The hour you spend with them is filled with acrobatic leaps, playful interactions, and the constant chatter of the troop.
4. L’Hoest’s Monkeys: The Albertine Rift Endemic
L’Hoest’s monkeys are an Albertine Rift endemic found in Uganda’s montane forests. These attractive monkeys with their dark bodies, white beards, and distinctive “cap” of fur are best seen in:
-
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest: Common along forest trails
-
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park: Found in the bamboo zones
-
Kibale Forest: Present but less common
5. Black-and-White Colobus Monkeys
The black-and-white colobus monkey is one of the most widespread primates in Uganda. With their dramatic black fur, white mantles, and long tail plumes, they are among the most photogenic monkeys in Africa. They are found in:
-
Kibale Forest: Troops of up to 400 individuals—the largest in Africa
-
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest: Common along forest trails
-
Queen Elizabeth National Park: In the Maramagambo Forest
-
Murchison Falls National Park: In the Budongo and Kaniyo Pabidi forests
6. Red-Tailed Monkeys
Red-tailed monkeys are small, agile primates with distinctive red forehead patches and white noses. They are common throughout Uganda’s forests and are often seen in mixed-species groups with other monkeys, providing excellent viewing opportunities.
7. Blue Monkeys
Blue monkeys, despite their name, are actually grey with a bluish sheen. They inhabit montane forests and are commonly seen in Bwindi, Mgahinga, and Kibale. Their acrobatic movements and social behavior make them a delight to observe.
8. Olive Baboons
Olive baboons are among the most widespread primates in Uganda, found in almost every national park. They are highly social, living in troops of up to 100 individuals. You will see them in:
-
Queen Elizabeth National Park: Common along the Kazinga Channel
-
Murchison Falls National Park: Frequently seen on game drives
-
Kibale Forest: Often seen at the forest edge
9. Vervet Monkeys
Vervet monkeys are common across Uganda’s savannah parks. With their distinctive blue scrotums and black faces, they are easily recognized and frequently seen in Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls, and Lake Mburo National Parks.
10. Other Primates in Uganda
Uganda’s primate diversity extends beyond the major species. You may also encounter:
-
Grey-Cheeked Mangabeys: Found in Kibale and Budongo
-
Red Colobus Monkeys: Uncommon but present in Kibale
-
Patas Monkeys: Found in the savannah of Kidepo Valley
-
Bushbabies: Nocturnal primates often heard but rarely seen
Best Time for Primate Trekking in Uganda
The best time to see primates in Uganda depends on your target species:
-
Gorilla Trekking: Year-round; dry seasons (June-September, December-February) offer easier trails
-
Chimpanzee Tracking: Year-round; chimpanzees are most active during the dry seasons
-
Golden Monkeys: Year-round; best during the dry seasons
