Hiking Mount Nyamurangira, in Congo
Nyamuragira, one of the few active volcanoes in Africa and the entire world, has erupted more than 40 times since 1885. One of the volcanoes in Virunga National Park’s Mikeno sector, it is situated in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This active volcano has burst multiple times between the 1850s and 2014.
Only a few kilometers separate Nyamuragira Volcano from Nyiragongo Mountain. Both volcanoes are still active, spewing lava that follows them into lower valleys and settlements. This volcano is the same size as Hawaii’s Mauna Loa. Lava pours down the slopes, many kilometers into the sparsely populated area of tropical forest and farming surrounding it, and frequently erupts from radial fissures.
The volcano is located northwest of Nyiragongo volcano and roughly 25 kilometers north of Lake Kivu in the East African Rift Valley. Although Nyamuragira still erupts almost every few years, it is not as accessible to tourists because of its rough, impassable roads, erratic security, and unpredictable eruptions.
It is also difficult for travelers to get to the center of the attraction because of the surrounding bamboo. Due to this, Mount Nyamuragira is now only well-known to experts who study volcanoes. These researchers have also found that, in accordance with a sequence of events, this athletic mountain will explode once more in the coming years, following the eruption of its counterpart, Nyiragongo.
Nonetheless, a lot of daring tourists have been drawn to Nyamuragira Mountain to see the natural volcanic explosions. While visiting the Democratic Republic of the Congo, tourists can have incredible hiking experiences amidst the Virunga rain forests, home to mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, and eastern lowland gorillas, among other great apes.
It’s thrilling and exhilarating to move through the dense forest and have to make your own path. Everyone on the planet would not want to miss this particular experience. Despite numerous hikes, most trekkers are unable to reach the summit of this volcano due to the consistently below-freezing weather.
On November 6, 2011, the most recent flank eruption at Nyamuragira began. Large tracts of forest caught fire as lava flows traveled many kilometers to the north, but because the region is sparsely populated, no infrastructure was harmed. Blotching from active vents and explosions filled with lava lakes, the tall spurting lasted around one week.
Early in January, the second cluster of vents on the same fissure system opened up and produced lava fountains as well, around a kilometer downslope. The well-known east Kimanura vent complex was constructed by a different, uniform array of vents. Lava fountains blended into a kind of severe spattering from blazing hot lava lake activity and continued to feel enormous lava flows traveling to the north, all while remaining indistinguishable from the activity of the western complex.
The eruption was still going strong on February 2. In terms of both duration and amount of lava ejected, this eruption ranks Mount Nyamuragira as one of the biggest volcanic explosions in history over the last 100 years.
Have you recently studied about volcanic eruptions or active volcanoes? Maybe you’ve simply heard about them and would like to see one for yourself. If so, where else are the most adventurous travelers likely to locate these kinds of places? One place that all travelers ought to go is Mount Nyamuragira, where they can see the century’s most eruptive volcano. Any traveler seeking the ultimate experience must include a safari in the Democratic Republic of the Congo on their bucket list and you wont regret taking this safari because it is great.
