Gorilla Trekking

There are wildlife encounters, and then there is gorilla trekking. Standing face-to-face with a mountain gorilla in the misty forests of East Africa is widely regarded as one of the most profound wildlife experiences on Earth. The sheer power of a silverback, the tender care of a mother with her infant, the playful antics of juveniles—these moments stay with you forever. At Chosen Expeditions, we have guided thousands of travelers into the forests of Uganda and Rwanda to experience this magic. Here is your ultimate guide to gorilla trekking, from preparation to the unforgettable encounter.

What Is Gorilla Trekking?

Gorilla trekking is the experience of hiking through dense montane forest to spend a limited time—typically one hour—with a habituated family of mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. The experience is carefully managed to ensure the safety of both visitors and gorillas, with strict regulations limiting group sizes to eight people per gorilla family and only one hour of direct contact.

Mountain gorillas are found in only three countries: Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. With fewer than 1,100 individuals remaining in the wild, gorilla trekking is a rare privilege that contributes directly to conservation efforts and local community development.

Where to Go Gorilla Trekking

Uganda: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Uganda is home to approximately half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas—over 460 individuals. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is the primary destination, with four trekking sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo. Each sector offers a unique experience, with different gorilla families and varying trekking difficulty.

Permit Cost: $800 for foreign non-residents (Gorilla Habituation Experience: $1,500 for four hours)

Why Choose Uganda: More gorilla families than any other destination; generally lower permit costs; diverse landscapes and the option of the habituation experience.

Uganda: Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Located in the Virunga Massif, Mgahinga is Uganda’s second gorilla trekking destination. It is home to one habituated gorilla family—the Nyakagezi Group—and offers the added attraction of golden monkey trekking in the same park.

Permit Cost: $800 for foreign non-residents

Rwanda: Volcanoes National Park

Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park is part of the Virunga Massif and is home to over 300 mountain gorillas. Rwanda is known for its premium gorilla trekking experience, with world-class infrastructure and exceptional guiding.

Permit Cost: $1,500 for all visitors

Why Choose Rwanda: Excellent infrastructure; proximity to Kigali (just two hours); smaller trekking groups; luxury accommodation options.

How to Prepare for Gorilla Trekking

Physical Preparation

Gorilla trekking requires a moderate to good level of fitness. The terrain is steep, muddy, and often slippery. While the trek can be as short as 30 minutes, it can also last five hours or more. We recommend:

  • Walking and Hiking: Begin walking on uneven terrain several weeks before your trip

  • Stair Climbing: Build endurance for steep slopes

  • Strength Training: Focus on legs and core for stability on uneven ground

Gear and Clothing

The right gear makes all the difference for successful gorilla trekking:

  • Footwear: Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support—thoroughly broken in

  • Clothing: Long trousers and long-sleeved shirts (lightweight, neutral colors)

  • Rain Gear: Waterproof jacket (rain is possible even in dry season)

  • Gloves: Gardening gloves for gripping vegetation

  • Daypack: Small backpack for water, snacks, camera, and rain gear

  • Water: At least 1.5 liters per person

  • Snacks: Energy bars, nuts, or fruit

What to Bring

  • Camera: With extra batteries (cold can drain batteries quickly)

  • Binoculars: For bird and wildlife viewing

  • Walking Stick: Provided at park headquarters, essential for stability

What Not to Bring

  • Flash Photography: Not permitted, as it disturbs the gorillas

  • Bright Colors: Avoid white, red, or fluorescent clothing

  • Excessive Gear: Pack light—you will be carrying everything

The Gorilla Trekking Experience

The Day Begins

Your gorilla trekking day begins early—typically with a 6:00 AM departure from your lodge. You will arrive at the park headquarters by 7:00 AM for registration and briefing. Here, you:

  • Present your permit and passport for verification

  • Receive a briefing on gorilla etiquette and safety protocols

  • Are assigned to a specific gorilla family based on your fitness level and preferences

  • Hire a porter if desired (highly recommended)

The Trek

From the briefing point, you set off with your guide, trackers, and a small group of fellow trekkers (maximum eight people per gorilla family). The trackers have been in the forest since dawn, locating the gorillas’ overnight nest sites. Your guide navigates you efficiently to the family.

The terrain is challenging—steep slopes, dense vegetation, and often muddy trails. Your guide sets a comfortable pace and stops regularly for rest and interpretation. Along the way, they point out forest wildlife, medicinal plants, and signs of gorilla activity such as nests, dung, and footprints.

The Encounter

When you finally locate the gorilla family, the magic begins. You have exactly one hour in their presence—an hour that passes in a heartbeat but stays with you forever.

During this hour, you will witness:

  • The Silverback: The dominant male, often the largest and most powerful member of the family

  • Mothers and Infants: The tender bond between mothers and their young

  • Juveniles: Playful interactions as young gorillas learn and explore

  • Social Dynamics: Grooming, feeding, and the complex relationships within the family

Your guide provides insights into the family’s dynamics, identifies individual gorillas by name, and ensures respectful behavior. The one-hour rule is strictly enforced to minimize disturbance to the gorillas.

The Return

After your hour with the gorillas, you trek back to the trailhead. The return often feels shorter, though fatigue may set in. Upon arrival, you will receive a certificate commemorating your gorilla trekking experience.

Gorilla Trekking Etiquette

Respecting the gorillas and their habitat is essential:

  • Maintain Distance: Stay at least 7 meters (21 feet) from the gorillas

  • Keep Voices Low: Speak in whispers to avoid disturbing the gorillas

  • No Flash Photography: Use natural light only

  • Stay with Your Group: Never wander off alone

  • If You Are Sick: Do not trek if you have a cold or illness—gorillas are susceptible to human diseases

When to Go Gorilla Trekking

Gorilla trekking is possible year-round, but the dry seasons offer the most favorable conditions:

  • June to September: Long dry season—ideal for trekking

  • December to February: Short dry season—excellent conditions

  • March to May: Long rainy season—muddy trails, lush landscapes, fewer tourists

  • October to November: Short rainy season—good for birding and photography

Gorilla trekking permits are limited and sell out months in advance, especially during peak seasons. Chosen Expeditions handles all permit booking and verification on your behalf, ensuring a seamless process.
